How did you decide to become a practitioner of Chinese medicine?
When I was a child, I saw a movie with a South African medicine woman, and I saw myself in her. I wanted to be a healer, to be of service to the world. My mother exposed me to natural remedies with food and herbs for my ailments, instilling in me the power of traditional medicine. The energy from my lineage by way of Guinea, West Africa is filled with midwives, herbalists and healers. My intention, upbringing and my desire to heal myself of my chronic health issues lead me down the path of holistic health.
While I was working as an office manager at an acupuncture school, I had a cyst on my right ovary. My doctor at the time suggested surgery. I opted for acupuncture instead, and within two months not only did my cyst dissolve but so did my painful menstrual cycles. The results were so miraculous I decided to become an acupuncturist.
You have such strong messaging around "love is medicine". Can you tell us how you weave this concept into your practices?
I lead with Love, I am committed to my own healing journey of being loving. And I create that energy and space in my work. I infused love in my work energetically and in my education with my clients. I empower my clients to utilize and connect to their love, and use it for their healing process. It looks different for everyone, but a large part of it is letting go of our emotional pains.
Similarly, we know you have great success in removing emotional blockages before treating the physical body. Why is this important, say for someone who is struggling to become pregnant?
Emotions are energy and they get stuck in our physical body, and are most often the cause of our health issues. It is vital to uncover and heal these emotional pains to release how it is manifesting in the body. In the struggle of becoming a mother, there are so many emotions that come up. Most of these emotions are past wounds that have not been resolved and are now being amplified. Working through these emotions is challenging, however it provides grace and ease to the journey towards motherhood.
Please tell us more about the technique you created, the Pelvis Wellness Method. How can this be effective for those on their reproductive journey, as well as for those who have been sexually abused or hold unresolved shame?
The Pelvis Wellness Method specifically addresses the repressed and unresolved emotions that are held in the pelvic bowl that manifest in a physical form negatively impacting our health and life. The pelvic bowl contains our womb (uterus) which has a direct energetic channel to our heart. When our hearts are broken it impacts our womb (and vice versa).
Our pelvic space holds all of our pain, sexual and physical abuse, unresolved shame, repressed anger, negative words...all of it. When that energy stagnates over the years it can lead to a multitude of physical ailments - like pelvic pain, infertility, fibroids, endometriosis, painful menstrual cycles, painful sex and more.
The Pelvis Wellness Method incorporates acupuncture, abdominal therapy and energy healing to address the physical, emotional and physical bodies. And most importantly, helping women to reconnect their heart and love to their womb.
What inspires your work?
My clients inspire me. Seeing women live with more freedom in their hearts and bodies. Helping women live a life without pain and with more radiant joy, fills me with happiness. Witnessing women finally getting pregnant, or no longer having menstrual pain. It is a gift… I love my work.
What is your self-care ritual?
My Peloton bike is my life line. I work out daily: cycle, weights and yoga. I meditate and pray daily and write in my gratitude journal. And I surround myself with things I love...
What are you watching/listening to/reading right now?
I love sci-fi - I just finished Star Trek Next Generation. Musically, I just started getting into Wiz Kid, I am currently in an Afro-Beat Season. I only read medical/acupuncture books (I am always studying). I do listen to audiobooks - I go between mindless fun books like the Julia Quinn books (Bridgerton) or inspirational books like Brené Brown.
