Tell us how you became interested in pre and postnatal fitness. How does this knowledge inform your work as a doula (or vice versa)?

I have been in the fitness industry for over 12 years teaching privately as well as group training. A lot of my clients were expecting or new parents and they were at a loss of how to train during pregnancy and how to return to exercise in the postpartum period. I wanted to give them the best possible training experience during pregnancy and postpartum so I began to educate myself and got certified to teach this specific demographic. During this time I learned about doula work and it felt like an organic fit to complement my training business. I am fascinated with the human body and I believe one of the most amazing physical feats and emotional transformations you can experience is to give birth to another soul. My unique background enables me to show up for my clients with knowledge, education, empathy, and hope.

How do you approach talking about fitness with your pregnant clients?

I always strive to meet my clients exactly where they are; focusing on their background with exercise, any past or current injuries, and their specific goals. Everyone's experience with exercise is very different and it is my job to ensure they are training as optimally as possible to reach their goals. I always remind my clients that the body is going though SO many amazing changes during pregnancy and that being a parent is very physical! Honoring that it is a time of great transition is extremely important. I find staying as consistent as possible with training while being kind to yourself is the best approach.

What is your philosophy around postnatal exercise? How soon after baby arrives is it safe/appropriate to start working out?

It is crucial that the postpartum person recognizes that every body’s recovery will be different and that above all, returning to certain exercise should not be rushed. I remind my clients to be as patient and in the present moment as they possibly can; the body (and mind) have gone through a huge transition and that should be honored and acknowledged. Postpartum training will focus on reconnecting to the core and pelvic floor, building strength and improving endurance while safely recovering from birth. Most don't realize how physical being a new parent actually is! I want to ensure you are moving optimally to keep you not only pain free but getting stronger so you can return to the activities that bring you joy.

What is your philosophy around birth work?

My job is to ensure you are as educated and empowered as possible as you go throughout your birth journey. I provide evidence-based physical and emotional support throughout your pregnancy, birth and postpartum period. Whether you are giving birth in a hospital, birth center, or at home I will be committed to facilitating a positive birth experience for you.

What inspires your work?

I come from an amazing family of strong women. My mom-mom, my mom, sister and niece always give me hope and strength. My clients also never cease to amaze me and I am honored to be part of their journeys.

What is your self-care ritual?

Lately I've been trying to get out into nature as often as I can! Hiking on the weekends with friends or just getting out of the city has been such a special time for me. I am also obsessed with skincare - I just got a LED therapy mask and love using it every night before bed.
